5 things that trip you up in a Tarot reading

5 things that trip you up in a Tarot reading (and how to fix them)

5 things that trip you up in a tarot reading

You pull cards with hope… only to end up:

  • staring at the 7 of swords and thinking: “Are they lying or am I lying to myself?”
  • seeing the Fool in the “what you need to know” position and getting hopelessly confused: am I a Fool?– or do I need to let go and have faith?
  • going down a side path and forgetting what you asked in the first place! 😖

Sound familiar? Yep, I hit these same impasses myself from time to time.

But — good news — there’s a simple fix to these Tarot trip ups.

Tarot Reading Trip up #1: I didn’t have a focus and now the reading is a mess

FIX: Ground the reading FAST with:

  • A single question — what do I need to know from this spread?
  • Pull 1 – 3 cards and be done with it

Lesson: Have your question clearly formulated before you start laying cards.

Remember when you were learning math and had to “carry the 1”? What happened when you didn’t write it down and just tried to hold it in your mind? Yeah. Exactly.

Tarot Reading Trip up #2: I’m worried about being ‘wrong’ or deluding myself

FIX: Remind yourself:

  • Trust your intuition, trust your gut, trust your feelings. If something feels off or not right, it probably is.
  • Don’t expect the cards to solve all your problems. YOU solve your problems.
  • If you find yourself obsessing, walk away.
  • Record all your readings on paper or on your phone or wherever and periodically review them. This is how you will hone your senses.

Lesson: The more you practice with Tarot, the more you will be able to trust yourself.

Tarot Reading Trip up #3: A ‘good’ card in a bad position or vice versa

FIX: Think of the card as existing on a spectrum:

  • The Sun in a negative placement – how can you bring light to the situation?
  • The Devil in a positive placement – how can you drop the act and laugh at yourself?
  • The Moon in a positive placement – your psychic abilities are peaking.
  • The Moon in a negative placement – your doubts and fears may be holding you back.

Lesson: Specific cards aren’t 100% good or 100% bad. They have good days and bad days, just like people. And, just like people they have a tendency to have a certain approach or mood. Be flexible and open when a card is displaying a different than ‘normal’ characteristic.

Tarot Reading Trip up #4: This card feels … blah. I’m getting nothing

FIX: Not every card HAS to mean something profound:

  • some cards are like extras on a movie set – not main characters, not supporting, just in the background.
  • per the previous point, what mood or texture does the card support in the reading?
  • you can always come back to it later in the reading.

Lesson: Don’t feel pressured to speak volumes on every card in a reading. Just hit the highlights and the ones that stand out, or are speaking the loudest.

Tarot Reading Trip up #5: I did a reading and I still don’t have the answer. Am I a bad reader?

FIX: Life is a journey not a destination. Tarot is a journey not a magic 8 ball.

  • looking for definitive answers can muddy the waters.
  • remember YOU are in charge of your life and Tarot is a tool.
  • maybe you are asking the wrong question.
  • give it time

Lesson: In our lightning fast world of quick answers, quick solutions, good vs bad ideas, and constant information, it’s soooo easy to get LOST.

Take a step back.
Connect to yourself in whatever way works for you:

  • meditation
  • a long walk
  • journaling
  • self hypnosis
  • gardening etc.

Tarot will still be there tomorrow.
