Summer Solstice

It’s Summer Solstice 2013.

The Sun is at it’s highest point in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere.

This is the longest day for us as well.

The Sun enters the sign of Cancer.

Summer begins.

It’s 12 noon on the solar clock of the year.

the sun tarot cardThe Sun Card of the Tarot tells us to enjoy our day in the sun.  To celebrate, dance, and romp.

It’s time to celebrate, go all out, and be the you that you are.

You are naked in the garden so don’t worry about having to put on airs or be something you’re not.

The sun is masculine, so now is the time to put a little oomph behind your efforts.  Don’t sit back and wait.

Thank you sun!

Summer Solstice Recipe

This summer solstice I’d like to share my recipe for a plant mulch that is so easy that even the laziest of us on the laziest summer day can pull it off.  Make this mulch and put it around the tomatoes you planted at Beltane.

The Ultimate Lazy Mulch

Ingredients:

  • black plastic garbage can
  • enough coffee grounds from Starbucks to fill it 1/4 to 1/2 way (Starbucks will give you all the coffee grounds you want for free)
  • newspaper, office paper, cardboard

Directions:

  1. Drill your garbage can full of large holes, the larger the better, the more, the better and be sure not to forget the bottom.
  2. Layer the can with coffee grounds, and then paper, continuing until you are out of materials.
  3. Water well, place in sun (you might want to do this before filling), and cover.
  4. Go ahead and add more coffee grounds and paper as you get them.
  5. The only thing you need to do is make sure it stays plenty wet/moist.
  6. When the can is full, let sit until the contents reduce by half.  This means a full garbage can becomes half full.

Your mulch is now ready to use.

Helpful hint:

The finer your paper and cardboard is, the better.  If you have the patience to shred it, then do so.  You might be able to find a local shredding company that will shred by the pound for you.  I have a place locally that shreds both newspaper and cardboard for me and it’s totally worth the price.

  1. I like making my own mulch too! Sadly no coffee shops like that near me – I just have to content myself with rattling bits of wood through the shredder. And imagining myself in ‘Fargo’ 😀

    • Yes, many coffee shops will gladly give away coffee grounds. I had a neighbor ask me to save mine for him and I replied just take a bucket to Starbucks. He was thrilled.

  2. I’m not much for gardening, leave that to my Dear One. Still, love the idea of dancing naked and putting some oomph into things 😉

  3. Probably a much better idea than what I currently do – dump all my coffee grounds on the patio pots… although it seems to help keep the slugs away! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  4. Thanks! I’ll make a note of your mulch recipe. I may be moving this year so no planting for me but hopefully next year I’ll be able to grow my own vegetables near my new home 🙂

  5. Dunno, surely the truly lazy mulch is just to buy some from the nearest nursery, and preferably have them deliver it 😉 Hmm, maybe that just shows I need more oomph!
